Differences Between Disk Recorders

Coach Paint includes two Disk Recorders for managing video import and export workflows: Disk Recorder 1 (DR1) and Disk Recorder 2 (DR2).

Disk Recorder 1 (DR1)

Overview

DR1 is the traditional recorder that has been part of Coach Paint for years. It is optimized for stability and supports exporting videos with audio.

Key Features

  • Audio Support: DR1 allows you to export videos with the original audio included.
  • Static Memory Allocation: The memory usage is fixed. You can configure the memory limit in the Config Editor, and it will remain constant regardless of the number of videos imported into Coach Paint.
  • Performance Stability: Due to its static memory configuration, DR1 offers a stable performance, especially for projects with large or numerous video files.
  • Format Matching Requirement: When exporting videos, the format set in the Config Editor must match the format of the imported videos. Failure to match the formats can lead to common errors like exported videos being faster or slower than the original clip

Disk Recorder 2 (DR2)

Overview

DR2 is the newer recorder introduced in Coach Paint version 9.7. It features enhanced automation and a more flexible memory system but does not yet support audio export.

Key Features

  1. No Audio Export Support: DR2 does not currently allow exporting videos with audio.
  2. Dynamic Memory Allocation: DR2 adjusts its memory usage dynamically based on the number and size of imported videos. This makes it more efficient in managing system resources.
  3. Automatic Transcoding: Videos imported into Coach Paint are automatically transcoded to match the format specified in the Config Editor, simplifying the workflow and reducing the need for manual adjustments.
